Icy winter weather brings along the often unavoidable risk of slipping and falling on ice. While most slips only result in a bruise to the ego, they can also result in painful injuries. At Park Physical Therapy, we want to help you get through the next few months of winter injury-free. Read on for more information about what to do if you slip and fall on the ice this season and how our team can help.

What To Do If You Slip And Fall On Ice?

We’ve all been there – that moment of panic when we walk too fast on an icy path and lose balance. When your feet lose traction and start to glide around, you may land on a hard layer of ice and concrete. Few events are more unfortunate than slipping and falling on ice during the winter. While this situation may be unavoidable, there are ways to lower your risk of injury if you happen to fall:

  • Tuck your chin down to your chest to protect your head.
  • If you can, try to fall on your side.
  • Avoid using your arms to catch yourself, as this could result in a fracture.
  • If you know you’re about to fall, bend your knees to reduce the distance of your fall.

Most injuries from falls on ice are caused by the wrenching and twisting of the back as you try to catch yourself. These injuries typically heal with rest, but you should not hesitate to seek treatment if you hurt yourself on the ice. Ironically, applying ice to the area in the first few days after the fall can help decrease any inflammation you may have suffered. Our team will evaluate your injury and devise a suitable treatment plan to get you back on your feet. This season, stay vigilant when facing the winter elements, and wear weather-appropriate footwear to ensure you reach your destination safely.
