Making Healthy Choices This Summer on Long Island

With BBQ season around the corner, it is easy to forget that diet that you’ve been trying to keep and just get lost in the wonderful world of comfort food. Although mostly everyone will be surrounded by delicious yet unhealthy food, it is important to be mindful of what exactly you are eating and how much of it you eat.  Be sure that you are making healthy food choices this BBQ season.

One of the easiest ways to still enjoy BBQ season while staying on the healthy side of things as well is to watch portion sizes. This way you can still enjoy your fair share of delicious food but at a healthy pace. Another way to stay healthy during BBQ season is to make sure you are eating enough vegetables, as well as using the leanest meat possible when grilling. This can go for the appetizers as well, go with something like carrots or celery instead of the normal chips and dip. During BBQ season some the most consumed beverages are alcohol and soft drinks, so a great way to ultimately stay healthy would be to cut back on overindulging in drinking too much and limiting yourself to about one or two drinks. Finally, the last part of the meal during BBQ season is always dessert, this is where people really tend to lose themselves with all of the cake, cookies, and other things. It is important to be mindful of how much you are eating during desert and try and show some self-restraint and limit yourself to just a small piece.

While everyone wants to enjoy themselves during meal time, taking good care of your body is important.  While we often write about taking good care of your body by being physically fit, stretching properly, being proactive in preventing injuries by visiting your physical therapist, eating well is right up there in importance.  Your body needs fuel to function properly, just like a car that is given the best oil, your body needs the right type of food to be at its best.  Be safe and enjoy your backyard barbecues, just be sure to add a few vegetables and keep the fatty foods to a limit.
