Tendonitis is a painful condition that people can, unfortunately, experience. It can go away on its own, but you may require further treatment with a physical therapist. At Park Physical Therapy, we can treat your tendonitis to help get you back on track to doing the activities you love.

What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis is the inflammation or irritation of the tendons in your body. Tendons connect bone to muscle, helping to keep you moving. Tendonitis is more commonly caused by the repetitive, minor impact of doing specific occupations, hobbies, or athletics. These activities can include gardening, painting, throwing, and pitching. However, it is also possible to obtain tendonitis from other scenarios, such as some of the following:

  • Bad posture.
  • Poorly positioned joint or bone.
  • Infection.
  • Arthritis.
  • Metabolic conditions.
  • Side effects from medication.

Where Can Tendonitis Occur?

Almost any area in the body can experience tendonitis if tendons are located there. The most frequent locations of tendonitis include:

  • Shoulders.
  • Elbows.
  • Wrists.
  • Hips.
  • Knees.
  • Heels.

Symptoms of Tendonitis

As a result of tendonitis, one may experience pain in the tendon or the surrounding area. Tenderness and mild swelling can also accompany this ailment. Pain can be gradual or sudden, depending on if calcium deposits occur. It is also possible to experience loss of motion in the shoulder, called adhesive capsulitis.

Does Tendonitis Ever Go Away?

The pain of Tendonitis gets worse with movement but could get better with self-care measures. If tendonitis symptoms do not go away after resting, icing, compression, and elevation, we recommend seeing our team at Park Physical Therapy

A physical therapist can provide range-of-motion exercises to improve flexibility and reduce stiffness in your tendons. We can also provide you with suggestions to modify the activities you enjoy doing that are worsening your tendonitis. The best way to ensure that your condition does not worsen is to seek treatment early on in the process.
