Concussions Treatment in Massapequa

Concussions are the least severe and most common traumatic brain injury. Concussions are caused by a direct blow to the head, a fall, or another injury that rattles the brain. A concussion can cause internal bruising, damaged blood vessels, or nerve injury. In 2010 alone, approximately 2.5 million people in the United States visited the hospital with traumatic brain injuries.

Concussions can affect anyone but often occur in children, teens, and young adults. Because children’s heads are disproportionately large compared to the rest of their body, bumps and fall more likely. Teens and young adults who participate in sports such as football, basketball, lacrosse, and hockey are more prone to head injuries, increasing the risk of a concussion. Studies show that 1 in 5 high school athletes will sustain a concussion during the sports season.

Concussions, while common, are sometimes difficult to diagnose. After a fall or hit to the head, the victim may feel and appear fine. Symptoms may only last a few seconds and signs may not appear for days or weeks after injury.

There are many different symptoms a victim may feel after a head injury. Any of these may be the result of a concussion:

  • confusion or feeling dazed
  • nausea or vomiting
  • headache
  • balance problems or dizziness
  • blurred vision
  • sensitivity to light and/or noise
  • ringing in ears

Concussions are measured on a scale of three severities. Grade one concussion symptoms last less than 15 minutes with no loss of consciousness. In a grade two concussion, there is no loss of consciousness, but symptoms last longer than fifteen minutes. If someone experiences a grade three concussion, consciousness is lost, and symptoms are more severe.

Many who have a concussion fully recover without treatment, but patients should seek a medical professional to verify the grade of the concussion. More intensive treatments like medication may be necessary depending on the grade and severity of the concussion. Patients with grade one and two concussions are advised to wait until all symptoms are gone before they return to normal activities, which could take hours, days, or a week.
